10 Reasons to Choose Granite Countertops for your Kitchen

If you’re in the midst of a kitchen remodel or building a kitchen for your new home, then the chances are that you would have come across suggestions for granite as your countertop material. If you still haven’t ticked granite, then here are 10 reasons for you to persuade you.

It's Pocket-Friendly

Yep, contrary to popular misconceptions, granite is indeed cheaper compared to other synthetic countertop materials. Due to the advancements in the quarrying process, mining and extracting granite is faster and more efficient than ever before.

This means granite is one of the affordable options today. And, if you’re on a tight budget, you can further bring down the cost of the material by opting for thin slabs.

A Wide Range of Colours

When it comes to colours, you have plenty of options, ranging from lighter shades like ivory, beige to darker shades like brown and black. Also, the endless patterns and shades make granite countertops unique.

Boost the Local Economy

When you buy granite, you’re contributing significantly to the local economy. The granite available with us is a result of the labour of hundreds of people. From quarry workers to engineers and fabricators, granite mining provides employment opportunities to tons of people.

By installing Indian granite on your countertops, you are thereby contributing to the local economy.

Easy to Maintain

Granite is one of the most durable natural stones. Meaning, it lasts for years to come, with minimal maintenance. You don’t need any fancy cleaners to remove stains and spills from your granite countertops. Just regular soapy water will do.

Before you clean granite, make sure that your countertops are sealed properly. Proper sealing is essential to prevent moisture from seeping into the porous stones of your countertop. And, remember don’t use an abrasive or harsh chemical cleaner. These leave scratches and can damage the smooth surface of your stone.

Regular wiping of the countertop with a microfiber cloth is enough to make it look good as new forever.

Heat Resistant

This is one of the main reasons why granite is one of the most preferred materials for the kitchen. Even if you leave a hot pot or pan accidentally on the stove, it won’t damage the surface of the stone. With that said, using pot holders is a good practice to extend the life of your countertop.

Lock out Stains

This is another huge benefit of granite. Sealing granite countertops protects them from discoloration and stains. You can either apply the sealant on your own or get the help of professionals. Generally, sealants last for years, and you only have to reapply the coating once every 3 to 5 years.

Hardy and Durable

Unlike synthetic countertop materials that chip and crack easily, granite countertops are long-lasting. Errant knives, dropped pans, family members sitting on top – nothing damages the surface of your countertop.

Remove Stains Easily

As mentioned above, you can lock out stains easily by applying a sealant. On the rare case, that a particular spill manages to penetrate the sealant and stain the surface of the stone, removing it is quite easy.

All you need is a homemade poultice, and you can pull out stains from the stone. Here’s a step-by-step guide to removing stains from granite counters.

  • Clean all food spills from the counter.
  • Make a paste of flour (all-purpose cooking flour) and hydrogen peroxide (available in pharmacies).
  • Apply this paste on top of the stain and cover the area with plastic wrap.
  • Use tape to hold the plastic wrap down
  • Let the paste sit untouched for 24 hours and then remove the wrap.
  • Once the paste is completely dry, remove it with a spatula or a plastic scraper.
  • Wipe the area with a wet cloth to remove traces of the paste.

Repeat the process for stubborn stains. For oily stains, make a paste using flour, acetone and baking soda. To remove mildew and mould, use bleach.

Make sure to reapply a coat of sealant after the stain removal process.

Eco-friendly

Granite is a naturally occurring stone that is dug from the Earth. It is then cut into slabs and used for countertops. It’s a gift from Mother Nature and is completely recyclable. If you’re looking for a green and sustainable option for your home, then granite is the way to go.

Resembles Other Expensive Stones

Very often, homeowners want the beauty of other expensive natural stones like marble but are scared of the cost. This is where granite comes in. It offers the best of both worlds – the beauty of expensive natural stones, along with the qualities of synthetic stones.

If you’re looking for a countertop material that ticks all the boxes – beauty, aesthetics, minimal maintenance and robustness, then granite is the way to go. It offers the best bang for your bucks.
